‘Agile’ Obelisk win at the BITC Awards

Obelisk win the Agile Organisation Award at the Business in the Community Awards 2014.

This is case study Obelisk submitted to Business in the Community to outline the company’s offer and impact.

Motivate:

Obelisk is a legal support company based in London providing flexible and affordable quality legal services in 22 languages to the in-house legal teams of global companies and law firms.  Its vision is to build the world’s largest outsourcing business centred around local clusters of highly skilled professionals.  Through its community of ex-city lawyers it is uniquely positioned to provide access to an untapped pool, consisting mainly of women that have left the profession to focus on other commitments, such as families.

Act:

The model provides lawyers with the ability to work in a fully flexible fashion.  There are three service lines:

  • Stand In lawyers, who work at the client’s offices, full or part time
  • Stand Out lawyers, who work remotely, on projects and
  • Stand By lawyers, who are a dedicated one on one resource for a particular client.  These offer different degrees of flexibility for clients and lawyers.

To maintain engagement and motivation an innovative online, collaborative platform has been introduced to give space for flexible remote workers to connect with one another and access tools and resources that enable them to stay up to date.

Effective communication is integral to how the business works, as teams of agile workers collaborate. The bespoke online platform builds on this.

Impact:

In the two and a half years since the company has started trading the talent pool has increased to 500 lawyers, from an initial pool of 4.  These highly skilled professionals are now able to take on interesting, challenging work in a way that allows them to balance their other commitments.

In the past year alone, the company has recorded growth of 400%.
